From Blackrock to KKR, for those active in asset management – we don’t want to give away too much, but – we’ve noticed a proclivity for the precision of Bontoni’s calzolaio (shoemaker in Italian) in our clients’ purchasing behaviour. It would seem the halls of the finance world aren’t just awash with whispers of money but also with the clunk of a first ironed and then waxed Bontoni sole. “Special shoes for a special few,” indeed. What these clients have in common beside their income size? They share a high regard for the small details most often overlooked.
Bontoni expertly crafts every shoe for only a small circle of connoisseurs as they choose to produce just a limited number of pair per year. Each shoe goes through a very elaborate production process. The workmanship of Bontoni exemplifies the long, but vanishing tradition of the Italian calzolaio who for centuries have insisted upon the strictest standards of artistry. As such, the craft remains untouched by impersonal production and the changes of time. Each Bontoni shoe requires hundreds of hand-stitches.The first commandment of their leather cutters? Using only the most supple and sturdy leather from the most reputable tanneries. To achieve the shoe’s precise contour, the calzolaio performs more than 300 tasks. Only after the upper has rested for a minimum of 25 days does the master craftsman begin the laborious process of hand-stitching the welt. Every small detail – from the sole to the hand colouring – is an expression of their commitment to perfection.
Inspired by Italy’s 1950’s jet-set era, the shoemaker gracefully blends Italian elegance with with contemporary style. Bontoni seeks to recapture the Italian elegance of yesteryear.
Nestled between the Apennines and the Adriatic sea, Montenegro in the Marches region is arguably the capital of fine Italian men’s shoemaking. It is only fitting Bontoni’s workshop is situated there. Just as the shoe belongs on the sole of every gent priding himself on paying attention to detail. “Don’t spend your time chasing luxury. Define it for yourself,” as their slogan goes.
You can shop Bontoni on BOULESSE, of course.
